What are energy balls?
Energy balls, energy bites, energy ladoo, protein bites or bliss bites, whatever you call them, they are one powerhouse of nutrients. Energy balls are a quick energy providing tasty snack with the right balance of protein, carbs and good fats. They are so versatile and can have any number of ingredients in them. They are super healthy and rich in protein and can be made in various flavors. Energy balls are usually super simple to make and can be put together in 15 minutes. Some energy balls have oats but I love the date nut and seed energy balls because they are grain-free and sugar-free and taste like cookie dough!

What ingredients are used to make the Date nut and seed Energy balls?
As I mentioned earlier, energy balls can be made with any kind of nuts and seeds. The basic ingredients are dates to provide the necessary sweetness and nuts to get that crunch. If you are allergic to nuts or don’t like them, replace them with any seeds you like. The following are the ingredients used in this recipe:
- Dates and Cranberries: Dates add the necessary sweetness and cranberries add a slight tart taste which we love. Please make sure to use unsweetened cranberries or they can be replaced with raisins.
- Nuts: I love using slightly toasted nuts in my energy balls. Its completely optional and can be added as is. We are using walnuts, cashews, almonds and pistachios. If you don’t like nuts, replace them with seeds.
- Seeds: Pumpkin and sunflower seeds are wonderful additions. They are crunchy and have a nutty flavor.. yum! Sesame seeds, Chia seeds and flax seeds can be added too. They are superfoods and add a healthy crunch to the recipe.
- A pinch of salt to bring out the sweetness of dates and nuts.
- And the last ingredient is coconut oil: This is completely optional, but I love adding some sort of coconut flavor to my sweets. You can use desiccated coconut instead of coconut oil.

How are the Date nut and seed Energy balls made?
They are so easy to make and it takes 15-20 minutes from start to finish. Feel free to use your own blend of nuts and seeds and enjoy different flavor profiles and textures.
- I like toasting the nuts in the oven for a few minutes to make them crunchy. This is entirely optional and raw nuts can be used to make the energy balls.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and add the nuts to a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes on the top rack, away from the heat.
- Once they are done toasting, remove the baking sheet from the oven and add the pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds to get them lightly toasted. The seeds get burnt very easily if they are toasted in the oven, so adding them at the end is quite enough.
- In the meantime, remove the seeds from the dates and add to the food processor.

- Add cranberries and pulse the dates and cranberries together till they are a little chopped.
- Add nuts, seeds, coconut oil and a pinch of sea salt to the food processor and pulse till it comes together.

- Transfer to a mixing bowl and mix or knead to make a dough kinda thing.
- Use an ice cream scoop or cookie scoop to make equal sized balls. Roll into smooth balls by rolling in between your palms.
- Place them in an airtight box and store in refrigerator.

Can I make energy balls without the food processor?
Absolutely! Use any blender you have and blend the dates in a coarse texture. Similarly pulse your nuts and seeds till they are coarsely ground. Mix everything in a mixing bowl and make ladoos or energy balls.
You can also chop the dates and nuts into small pieces and mix and knead them together till they come to a dough like consistency. Its easy to make energy balls this way too!
Why make them homemade?
The main reason is that I can control what kind of ingredients go in the recipe. I like to use organic nuts and seeds and its not easy to find good clean energy bars in the market. Also, preservatives!!! Homemade stuff doesn’t have any preservatives and I can control how sweet my energy bars are going to be.

How to store the Date nut and seed Energy balls?
They stay perfect for at least a month when saved in an airtight box in the refrigerator. They stay fresh for 1 week at room temperature.
